Divisional outlook - nl west

Despite being widely ripped as the worst division in baseball in 2005, one facet of the division last year on which everyone agreed was the competitiveness, as nearly every team had a chance to win the division late in the season. Once again, no one is out of it in this division in 2006, as every team sits within three games of the others as of this writing.

Colorado Rockies

Currently

Although the Rockies have leveled off just a tad lately, they still sit at the top of the division thanks to several players getting hot at different times. Lately, Matt Holliday has been tearing it up, and his season average sits at .307. Others who have contributed offensively include Brad Hawpe, Garrett Atkins Cory Sullivan, all young players like Holliday who are forming a formidable nucleus for the team. Perhaps the biggest reason for the Rockies’ success so far is their bullpen. The team is 16-1 when leading after seven innings.

Outlook

If the team’s young players continue to perform, star Todd Helton regains his usual form and the pitching staff continues its late-inning dominance, the Rockies have a great chance to play deep into October.

Arizona Diamondbacks

Currently

The Diamondbacks have a mix of experienced veterans like Craig Counsell and Shawn Green combining with young potential stars like Chad Tracy and Conor Jackson producing offensively. As a team, the Diamondbacks rank 1st in the NL in team batting average and in the top 5 in runs, hits and OBP. On the mound, the Diamondbacks are also producing results. The staff ranks in the top 5 in the NL in ERA, K/BB and K/9 innings.

Outlook

As is the case with every team in this division, the Diamondbacks should be in the thick of things in this division with their mix of quality hitting and stingy defense and pitching.

San Diego Padres

Currently

No team is hotter than the Padres have been lately, and the defending division champions appear to be rounding into the form that took them to the postseason in 2005. Despite ranking near the bottom in nearly every team-oriented offensive statistical category in the NL, the Padres are featuring several exciting young players every day including Josh Barfield and Khalil Greene. As those players continue to improve, the pitching staff has been holding the fort, ranking near the top of the NL in team ERA, K/BB, BAA and OPS.

Outlook

If the hitting improves, and old standbys like Trevor Hoffman and Woody Williams continue their early season success, the Padres will at the very least be in the fight in October.

Los Angeles Dodgers

Currently

The Dodgers, when breaking down statistics, are a difficult team to figure. There really aren’t any individuals having a huge year at this point, even though J. D. Drew appears to finally be living up to his promise. As a team, the Dodgers rank second in the NL in runs, RBIs and OBP. The pitching staff is just the opposite. As a team, the Dodgers are not near the top in any NL statistical category, but individuals such as Brett Tomko and Takashi Saito boast of ERAs right around 3.0.

Outlook

Predicting the Dodgers is as difficult as their statistics are to figure. The team, given the division, is certainly in the race, and if a few more individual hitters get hot and stay hot, the team can make a move towards the title.

San Francisco Giants

Currently

Despite all the attention these days being paid to Barry Bonds and his pursuit of the home run record, there are other Giants enjoying solid seasons. The team is right there with everyone else in the division, and the veteran influence on the team is telling. Moises Alou was off to a torrid start until recently being placed on the 15-day DL with a sprained ankle, and Steve Finley is also out of the gates with a flourish. Pitching has been a problem though, as the Giants are currently last in the NL in team ERA.

Outlook

It doesn’t look like anyone in this division will be out of it this season, and if the Giants can get improved pitching and a little less spotlight as the Barry Bonds chase subsides, this team could challenge, especially with a healthy Alou.

Get the perfect dartboard and install it properly

Dartboards are typically made of sisal fiber and a slim metal wire lines every section. The numbers showing the scoring sections in the board is usually made of wire. The dartboard is divided into twenty sections, each with a scoring of one to twenty points, by wires that extend from the small inner circle to the outer circular wire.

1. Hanging Procedure:

A dartboard should be hung in such a manner that the distance, using the center of the bullseye as a point of reference, is five feet and eight inches parallel to the hockey line. Hang the dartboard on a backing, such as a backboard or any type, such as plywood, to prevent occasional wild darts from ruining your wall. Ideally, the backing is twice the size of the board and you could cover it with either felt paper or cloth so that it looks neat. Make sure too, that the backing is secured firmly to the wall and should not sway or vibrate, when hit by darts. The hockey, or the line measurement has to be 7 feet 9.25 inches from the board’s face horizontally to the floor. To obtain a precise measurement, start from the line from the bullseye going down to the floor, measuring 9 feet 7 3/8 inches.

2. Lighting

Install some lighting. Shadows can be created due to poor lighting. Put up a bright light, making sure that it is concentrated and aimed to the board. Place a cover to keep off incoming darts as well as to hold back the light, away from the thrower’s eyes. Your lighting should be set up in a way that it radiates to the entire area of the board, not causing any shadow and not interrupting your throw. The location of the scoreboard should be on either side of the board and not to interfere with the next player’s shot when one is scoring. The scoreboard’s size will be up to you. If you plan on having a lot of people over, a wide scoreboard may be the best choice so you can write challenges aside from the score. There are many kinds of scoreboard available, so choose the one that you are comfortable with. While others prefer the classic blackboard and chalk, you may not, as it does create chalk dust that gets on to your hands and fingers, and you might also be allergic to chalk particles. If you are, there are many alternatives.

3. Scoring:

Traditionally, sections of the dartboard is numbered and colored black and yellow. By hitting one of the large numbered sections, you score according to the value of that section. By hitting the thin outer portion of the board which are red and green, you score a double point, whatever the value of that certain section. Likewise, when you hit the thin inner portion of these sections, halfway between the central circle, colored red or green and the outer wire, your score is triple the points of whatever value that is imbedded in that section. Hitting the bullseye or the inner red area scores fifty points and hitting the green outer ring scores twenty five points. There is no score when you hit outside the outer wire. Any dart that is thrown on the board but does not remain on the board, such as a bouncing dart or a dart that fell after it has been thrown, scores nothing. Some rules, however, allow scoring if a dart hits an obvious scoring section and then drops and is caught before it reaches the ground or floor.

4. Dartboard Types:

Traditional bristled dartboard

Bristles has the function of holding on to the darts so that it cud not fall easily to the surface and puncture it. It naturally heals itself if cleaned and dust is removed.

Magnetic dartboard

A dart with no needle, it uses high energy magnets in making the darts stick to the board. This board is made from rubberized iron to attract magnet. This is a great practice game for kids. Very safe and attractive, as cartoon characters are displayed on the face of the board.

Is al michaels still the best nfl play-by-play announcer

When ABC “traded” Al Michaels to NBC this off-season to be their number one play-by-play announcer for their new Sunday night NFL football package, it became clear that he is still perceived to be the best play-by-play announcer in the business. However, is that perception still a reality?

Michaels began his career back in 1986 on ABC’s Monday Night Football, where he remained until switching to NBC for the 2006 season. While at ABC, Michaels was part of several broadcast teams including the likes of Dan Dierdorf and Frank Gifford, Boomer Esiason, Dennis Miller and Dan Fouts, and most recently John Madden. Despite the frequent changes, Michaels always remained because of his innate ability to convey an array of information to the casual viewer.

With NBC’s recent signing of Michaels and John Madden to man their Sunday Night NFL booth, it shows that Michaels is still the most sought after announcer in the business. NBC decided to woo Michaels over Fox and CBS lead play-by-play announcers Joe Buck and Jim Nantz respectively, as well as veterans Dick Enberg and Mike Patrick, and newcomers Kevin Harlan and Gus Johnson..

The amazing thing about Michaels (and probably the reason why NBC chose him) is that he is nearly flawless. He rarely misses a call, is always up to date with the latest news, knows the rules, and adds just enough humor. His only real “flaw” may be his desire to mix in references to the point spread and over/under of games despite the fact that the NFL would rather he not.

Of those mentioned above, Buck, Harlan and Johnson have talent but are still too raw, while Enberg is on the tail end of his career. Both Jim Nantz and Mike Patrick can certainly make their cases as the best play-by-play announcer in the sport.

Nantz (paired with Phil Simms) likely was not targeted because of his value to CBS as a college basketball announcer. I doubt that CBS would likely let him go, at least not without a fight. Michaels on the other hand, did not have an NFL job with ABC after MNF moved to ESPN. His only job on ABC was with the NBA, something he wasn’t particularly good at.

With Sunday Night Football moving to NBC, Mike Patrick was left out of the NFL, which is an absolute travesty. Patrick, who will now work College Football for ESPN, handled the ESPN Sunday Night booth with Joe Theisman and Paul Maguire with phenomenal skill. Theisman and Maguire would often engage in pointless arguments and make erroneous statements, and Patrick was able to pull it all together into a somewhat presentable booth. His abilities were most recognizable when he missed time in the 2004 season and was replaced by Pat Summerall for a few games. Those broadcasts were absolutely unwatchable. It is likely that he wasn’t considered for the NBC job because he didn’t come packaged with a respectable partner (like Michaels does with Madden) and because he doesn’t have the name recognition of Michaels. Both reasons are understandable, but make no mistake his skills are on par with Michaels.

In an industry with remarkable turnover and constant competition, Michaels has remained at the top of his field for nearly twenty years, as evidenced by his new deal with NBC. This is a testament to his dedication and work ethic in an extremely difficult and demanding industry.

Hotels how to get free gifts

Planning to visit Las Vegas or any other vacational resort where casinos are a major portion of their business? I have just the thing for you. Here, I will show you how to pass off as a High Roller and collect many complimentary items and gifts.

What is the Secret?

The Secret is that you have to make them believe you are rich and love gambling. In short you have to impersonate a High Roller.

Why?

Hotels love high rollers because these players leave behind thousands of dollars each visit. And the real cool part about this is that if you act the role, casinos will lavish you with the same gifts and complimentary items that a real High Roller would receive.

How ?

It is not that difficult to fool the hotel and resorts with some finesse and true self-confidence. It can be done.

1) The Way you Dress:

Elegant and smart is the way to go. Opt out of the baseball cap, t-shirt and jeans. Try and wear a suit or at least a regular buttoned shirt with an elegant dark jacket. It was Shakespeare who said that the clothes maketh a man, and so too, when going to a hotel resort. They judge you according to how you dress, so dress according to the role.

2) A Large Pad of Notes:

Yes. Just like in the movies. Carry a large bundle of notes with you and keep them in plain sight. You do not have to really take with you that much. Instead, take a few notes and place them at the top and at the bottom of real note-size paper cuttings. Just remember to never expose this while you are in the casino. Use other notes you’re your wallet instead. But do it nonchalantly so that none of the casino personnel will notice.

3) Always Flash Your Notes Around: No matter where you go, whether its to the hotel restaurant for lunch or for to the bar. They will be watching. From time to time, use that money to play at a range of table games or video game and bet some of that money. Remember you must use some of your money to play but just do not use all of it.

4) Play Complicated Games:

This is one of the more problematic things to do and requires some training at home. Learn on your own how to lay and how to bet on the high rolling games such as roulette, baccarat and craps. You could also play poker or Texas holdem in one of the larger ante tables, but in any case stick to your plan and you will soon reap the flowers.

Conclusion:

Above, I have outlined some of the more practical methods by which one can save money by receiving gifts from the casino. These gifts range from casino comps (free money to play), room deals that can get nearly free and many others such as free drinks, clothes, coupon to stores in Las Vegas and many more. Note that what you are doing here is completely legal provided you don't take up a false name or falsify your passport card.
