Ford to exit the minivan market

All the car blogs lately have been speculating on the direction that the Ford Motor Company is going to take in the wake of declining sales and stiff competition. Ever since the Chrysler Corporation invented the minivan market back in the early 1980s with its line of “K-car” derived minivans – the Dodge Caravan, Plymouth Voyager, and the Chrysler Town & Country – Ford has been playing catch up. Indeed, a series of forgettable “star” named minivans were served up by Ford and summarily rejected by consumers: the Aerostar, Windstar, and the Freestar. Later, both Honda and Toyota brought out their own entries and Ford, along with Chevrolet found themselves trailing badly in an overcrowded segment. Indeed, several GM divisions sell minivans, as does Kia and Nissan, making the market especially tight.

Should Ford decide to go ahead with plans to ditch the minivan market, it wouldn’t be a complete retreat. For one, many consumers prefer the automaker’s popular Ford Explorer SUV while its all wheel drive Freestyle wagon/crossover competes well too. Finally, another vehicle – the Edge – will soon make its debut and likely pull many minivan customers over. The Edge will be yet another crossover vehicle – somewhat of a SUV/wagon hybrid – and fill the need for consumers.

According to my latest information these are the states with 75 mph speed limits:

Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma , South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming.

Hurrah for them! Quite a few, but maybe not exactly where you want to live. Well, the second rank are the states with 70 mph limits – the same as in the UK. There are quite a number giving you more choice:

Alabama, Arkansas, California, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and West Virginia

That's 33 of the US states allow you to drive at 70 mph or higher.

Maybe those places don't appeal, and I must admit that the situation could easily change as oil becomes scarcer and more expensive – expect that to happen soon. Remember, it was the first energy crisis that brought blanket speed limits on freeways and expressways and motorways in the first place. In the UK the government said the limit of 70 mph was temporary. Now, with cars being so much safer than they were then it is clear that that limit, and the old 55 mph limit in the USA is well out of date.

However, speed limits generally may fall again in the next five years.

To help you keep out of trouble you need to:

Know the speed limit wherever you are driving – not too easy with the way limits change every few hundred yards on some roads, and when you change from one state to the other;

Concentrate on your driving, and don't accidentally keep going faster and faster on a straight boring road without knowing it;

Watch for any signs of speed traps;

Drive on the center lane on highways;

If legal, buy a radar and laser detector, or at least a device that tells you where the speed traps are.

You can still find places where you can drive fast and safely but a device that warns you of speed traps, which can bring those speeding tickets is a good idea.

Truck and suv exhaust systems - different styles

This means that your engine has less restriction and generally has quicker throttle response. It also lends itself to producing a louder, more aggressive exhaust tone.

Dual Rear Exit

This configuration of high-flow exhaust system uses two pipes to vent the exhaust gases from your motor. This unique design differs from the previous two because the pipes exit out the rear of the vehicle, just under the bumper or roll pan. This free-flowing style of exhaust system has all of the benefits of the Dual Side Exit exhaust but can be perceived as louder because the sound is directed out the rear of your vehicle, directly at the traffic behind you. Depending on how aggressive your driving habits are, this can either be a good thing, or a bad thing. One side note: you may not be interested in this exhaust system if you are towing any kind of trailer because the exhaust gases can leave soot on whatever you’re towing.

Extreme Dual Exit or Opposite Side Dual

This style of cat-back exhaust uses two pipes to exit the exhaust gases from your motor but differs from the Dual Rear Exit. The Extreme Dual Exit has one pipe exiting behind each rear tire. This free-flowing exhaust system has all of the same benefits of the other dual systems, but unlike the Dual Rear Exit, it won’t leave soot on your trailer.
