Learning spanish begin by listening - part 1

I remain convinced the primary reason why so many Americans are attracted to Mexico is in the Gringolandias, or Gringo Expat Enclaves, they will never be faced with what seems to be the overwhelming task of learning Spanish. The British, I am told, do the same thing in the south of France. An intricate and well-organized expat infrastructure awaits the would-be retiree and alleviates the fear of having to master the language. Everything is organized around the monolingual Gringo and negates any need whatsoever to learn Spanish.

Whether this is a good or bad thing is not within the scope of this series, "Begin By Listening." I think the point is, and most of my readers would agree, if I am going to gripe and complain why something called a "Gringolandia" should even exist, then I should provide an answer or solution instead of criticizing all the time. I have been writing for years about how to go about overcoming the fear of learning Spanish. However, it wouldn't hurt to go over it again, perhaps in a new and different light.

Two important advantages of learning Spanish, if you plan to retire to Mexico, are:

You could significantly increase your social standing and sense of community if you were able to socialize with more than the other gringos in the Gringolandias. In Southeast Asia, the locals used to call this phenomenon "Social Incest." The Americans, mostly those in the Foreign Service, would live in American enclaves and only socialize with one another. Their ability to mix with the locals was non-existent because they didn't know the languages. Unlike their then cold-war counterparts, the Russians, the American Foreign Service workers were then, as they are today, not required to have any language fluency nor develop it onsite. The Russians arrived onsite with bilingual and bicultural fluency. Fluency before arriving in the country—imagine!

Without the language, your social involvement is severely limited to only those who speak English. That can and should change, in my view.

The other reason is that in the Gringolandias, the real estate for residential housing can cost much more than in your ordinary, run-of-the-mill Mexican neighborhoods. Not always is this true, but you will have an ability to ferret these deals out if you are bilingual.

The importance of sharing stories with your child

All official research shows that the early years involve the highest rates of learning, and the habits formed at a young age will stay with them for a lifetime. It's therefore a perfect time to introduce children to books which educate and inform throughout life.

Children of any age can benefit from experiencing books on a day to day basis, and it's always best to make time for children to be read or be read to each and every day. A good selection of quality children's books is a very important part of the whole literacy process, but not all children's book are recommended.

Grabbing a children's book or two at a supermarket check-out is no guarantee of quality, and children may become bored or turned-off reading by some less authoritative works on the market.

Children are never too young to enjoy books, and for babies it's not just about reading the words. It's also about enjoying the interaction with the parents as the child sits with them and enjoys the attention. Babies feel comforted by a parents voice.

Bedtime stories are a great way to help send babies off to sleep, and help to develop memory skills during repeated tellings of favourite tales. Introducing reading to babies sets them on the road to the wonders of the written word, and help provide a useful grounding in listening and reading skills as they grow.

Toddlers also love the bright colours and images, as well as the repetitive text of stories that focus on familiar everyday events. At this young age, books do not have to include words in order to be enjoyable. Toddlers have the imagination to take picture books and create their own stories around the various pictures in the book.

Toddlers often enjoy looking at the same book, or having the same story read to them over and over again as they anticipate what is on the next page. It's also a good age to learn the basics of language and numbers, and reading along to stories and counting books will aid their understanding of words and numbers.

Favourite characters from their favourite Bailey Hill story books are a particularly good way of teaching the basics in fun ways they will enjoy. Preschool children are often excited to read and learn about the wider world outside of their home, school, or environment. They enjoy listening to slightly more complex texts with more in-depth characters and still enjoy good rhythm and some repetition.

What s new in new orleans schools

Nearly two years ago, in the fall of 2005, Hurricane Katrina ravaged her way through New Orleans. Not only were homes, families, businesses, and business owners drastically affected by the storm, so were the students, teachers, staff, and administrators of New Orleans Schools. Prior to the storm, student enrollment in the New Orleans Schools system numbered at approximately 65,000. Presently, fewer than 22,000 students have returned to the area. The devastation wreaked by Katrina was horrific. But if every cloud has a silver lining, for the New Orleans Schools that silver lining is the chance to rebuild the system from the ground up.

Many see the storm’s devastation as a chance to “showcase” what the private sector can do to help facilitate urban school reform in New Orleans Schools. Private groups are helping to finance charter schools and are also supporting non-profit groups that are working hard to recruit teachers and principals. A recent study performed to evaluate the New Orleans Schools two-district system reported three major flaws:

1. Student access to quality neighborhood schools is inadequate; many students either do not have access to bus transportation to New Orleans Schools that are open, or do not have a neighborhood school to attend.

2. A severe teacher shortage is affecting quality classroom instruction; virtually all pre-Katrina teachers were fired, and the New Orleans Schools need to hire an estimated 400 - 700 teachers in time for the fall semester.

3. The balkanized school system is a nightmare; the “two-district” system consists of a “maze of state, parish, and charter-operated schools with separate processes for applying and registering with different rules and regulations. … [It’s] a bureaucratic nightmare that shouldn’t be copied elsewhere,” said United Teachers of New Orleans (UTNO) president, Brenda Mitchell. (The UTNO are calling for legislative fixes during the upcoming special or regular legislative sessions).

Unfortunately, while the nation’s eye turns to the state of New Orleans Schools only after Hurricane Katrina hit, many of its problems have existed for years. New Orleans Schools were known for low achievement, crumbling infrastructure, and rampant corruption.

While all inner-city schools face challenges, the universal issue is poverty. Whether in New Orleans Schools or Chicago Schools, studies show that a child who comes from a low-income household faces far greater challenges than a child in even a low middle class situation. Now teachers in New Orleans Schools must also deal with the traumatizing “post-shock” experiences their children face. Counselors in the New Orleans Schools relate understandable stories of children coping with stress and fear.
